Since about 10.9, Apple has started locking down OS X, removing more 'techie' features, and giving it more of the locked down feel of iOS, which I don't think is a good thing. If you are looking to choose an OS for a fairly modern Mac, choose Sierra. It's the most stable release that is supported at the moment imo. I don't know Yosemite, but I'd recommend to wait a bit before updating. High Sierra was a really bugged version, and despite things are much better than it was after release, I would recommend to wait that Apple correct the remaining bugs. As if it's worth to update, I'd say yes. It's a good practice to keep system up to date.
